Overview

Originating in 1916, Wyoming High Country’s ranch consists of 124,000 controlled acres, which currently runs 2,000 head of mother cows. Wyoming High Country extends and invitation for you to join them on what they consider the four most exciting weeks of the ranching year! The ranch lies in the beautiful Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming and is definitely not a dude ranch. The ranch’s cowboys are the “real thing”. They have been raising and working cattle for longer than most people today have been alive. Not only will you experience the real life of a cowboy, but you will also see beautiful scenery, wildlife, wild flowers and much, much more.

In April, it is necessary for the ranch to gather up their cows and calves and move them to the ranch’s spring grass country. At the end of May and beginning of June, once the majority of the calves have been born, it is time for the ranch to once again gather the cows and calves, brand and vaccinate them and then move the herd up on top of the Big Horn Mountains for to their summer grazing lands. Due to the number of calves needing branding, it takes up to two weeks to get the job completed. In October it is necessary once again to round up the cows and calves, bring them to lower grazing grounds and begin to wean the calves in order to prepare them to be sold. Everyone is encouraged to get involved. The ranch needs people to brand, vaccinate, wrestle calves, hold herd and rope. Not only does the ranch welcome your help with these jobs… they appreciate your help.

Your day will begin with a big home-cooked breakfast. Once saddled you are ready to begin your day. Days will be long and tiresome but you’re guaranteed to enjoy yourself and feel like you did a real “cowboy’s” day’s work. Lunch will be provided either at the branding site or along the trail. It is not mandatory that you ride, as you are welcome to take a day and go hiking, or just take the day to rest at camp. If you don’t know how to ride… you will learn. Wyoming High Country has horses to fit all levels of riding abilities. If you have always wanted to try roping, the ranch hands will work with you in the evenings to teach you the necessary skills. If you have the proficiency it takes to begin to rope off a horse then you’ll certainly be given the opportunity to test your skills. It’s not as easy as it looks. At the end of the day you will be supplied with a good hearty meal prepared by the ranch’s professional staff.

If you have ever wanted to be part of a real cattle ranch, Wyoming High Country is ready for you!
