Overview
McGarry Ranches is a working cattle outfit. For those who enjoy horses and wish to experience the lifestyle of a working cowhand, this is the place to spend your vacation.
The McGarry Ranches are actually three ranches located in southeastern Idaho, in the upper Snake River Valley and along the South Fork of the Snake River, approximately 90 miles west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Snake River runs through ranch property. Included in the property used for cattle operations are approximately 55,000 acres of state and federal permits in the Big Hole Range of the Rocky Mountains.
During various seasons of the year, guests are invited to join the cowboy crew in activities to include calving, doctoring, branding, tracking and gathering strays, and trailing (driving) cattle for range management.
Day to day activities also include roping, fence mending and never ending odd jobs, all of which maintain the integrity of the herd that numbers the better part of 2,000 head of cattle.
McGarry does their work with the cattle as the need arises, not a specific activity at a specific date. Most of the week is spent scattering cattle on the range, packing salt, trailing cattle to new pasture on the mountains, riding through the herd looking for sick or injured stock, checking pairs (cow/calf), riding fence and the never ending additional details that make up a cowhand's day.
Almost all of the work is performed from the backs of ranch broke Quarter Horses. You will be matched with one or two horses to be used by you for the duration of your stay at the ranch. McGarry maintains about 40 horses for use in the cattle operations. A saddle will be provided for your usage or you can feel free to bring your own.
You will notice that the "guest" handle lasts about as long as the handshake. After that you are part of the ranch's family of wranglers from many parts of the world.
The McGarry Family has been taking in guests since the 1980s. Former wranglers from years past often stay in touch just to relive and talk about what has been described as the most satisfying and memorable vacations of their lives. The feeling of kinship remains strong. McGarry is mindful that in a great many instances they are part of the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to cowboy/cowgirl up and ride the range. No nose-to-tail riding, but actual productive work along with the ranch crew.
Easy riding, cattle work, new friends, breathtaking scenery, campfires, cookouts, restful sleep at day's end and the anticipation of the new day in the saddle makes for the stuff that dreams are made of. Traffic jams and the harried lifestyle of big city living seem far, far away. The smile on your face and the feeling of satisfaction comes from knowing you have made a difference. Today you were a cowhand with the McGarry Ranches and have become a part of their history.
At week's end, don't be surprised by that tear in your eye and perhaps even those of the staff at McGarry's. You leave with the knowledge that the ching of spurs and the slap of leather can again be heard anytime you wish to return to your extended family here at the McGarry Ranches. They appreciate you and thank you for the trust you have placed in them.
Thank you for your interest in McGarry's way of life. Share the cowboy dream with, Theron and Jean, owners, Derk, wrangler and cow boss, Harold, wrangler and guest Manager, Lana and Ron, wranglers.
All riding personnel are Idaho Licensed Guides and first aid certified.
