Overview

The story of the Lazy E-L Ranch is a story of the old west, of settling a piece of land at the turn of the century, driven by youth and adventure. It is also the story of a family who progressively adapted through the years without sacrificing their ranching way of life.

Malcolm S. Mackay was just 19 when he first viewed the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains and began the legacy of the Mackay ranch. Today, his great-granddaughter, Jael Kampfe, who manages the 12,000 acres her family has called home for over a century, will introduce you to Lazy E-L’s family and traditions.

Intensive grazing, land preservation, stockmanship, and traditional western values combined with progressive applications are common themes at the Lazy E-L, past and present. An active part of the neighboring area, the Lazy E-L firmly believes in supporting the local ranching and agricultural community just as the predecessors did. When you visit the Lazy E-L, you partake in a tradition of family, ranchland, and the allure of the west.

Just an hour and a half away from Billings Logan International Airport and a half-hour drive from historic Red Lodge, Montana, and the spectacular Beartooth Highway, the Lazy E-L is located in some of Montana’s most breathtaking country. If you can be persuaded to leave your saddle and Lazy E-L’s ranch broke horses, Cody, Wyoming, home of the renowned Buffalo Bill Historic Center, and the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park are mere hours away. However, we can’t guarantee that you will want to go too far from your home for a week: if daily riding, watching the sunrise, homemade and hearty meals, and the intimacy of a family owned and operated ranch appeal to you, you are at the right place. From the cowboys to the cooks, everyone at the Lazy E-L looks forward to meeting another member of their “extended” family. With returning guests from all over the world, Lazy E-L Ranch guesses they feel the same way. Come join Lazy E-L Ranch... one week with them could change your life.
